FixMyCar discusses the pros and cons of buying mid-range tyres.

Like many drivers, when it’s time for a new set of tyres, I usually choose a mid-range brand because it offers the best of both worlds; it’s more affordable than buying premium tyres, and they are more durable than budget tyres.

That said, there are downsides to mid-range tyres, too. Not all brands were created equal.

This guide is here to help you navigate the decision-making process of buying tyres. It covers the pros and cons of mid-range tyres and provides an overview of the brands that fall within this category.

We also have a guide to budget tyres and a guide to premium tyres

What are mid range tyres?

Mid-range tyres provide a happy medium between premium and budget, making them the most popular choice for drivers. They are more expensive than budget tyres because they perform better, offering a level of durability and grip unmatched by their cheaper counterparts.

However, mid-range tyres do not provide the next-level performance of premium tyres and often come with fewer innovative design features.

How long do mid range tyres last?

On average, a set of tyres will last between 20,000 and 40,000 miles, with some premium tyres lasting even longer. You can expect mid-range tyres to fall somewhere in the middle of this range, though the distance will vary between brands and will be impacted by the condition of the roads you drive on and your driving style.

This guide to tyre tread explains why your tread depth matters and how to check it.

Benefits of mid range tyres

Below is a table of the pros and cons of mid-range tyres, each of which stems from a comparison with budget and premium tyres.

ProsCons
Cheaper than premium tyresNot as cheap as budget tyres
More durable than budget tyresNot as durable as premium tyres
Better performing than budget tyresNot as high-performing as premium tyres

What’s the difference between budget and mid range tyres?

As you can see from the table above, mid-range tyres perform better than budget tyres in every category except for price. This is because budget tyres are made from cheaper, less durable materials and feature fewer advanced design features, resulting in a weaker performance across the board.

Since mid-range tyres are more durable you’ll have to replace them less often than budget tyres.

Are mid range tyres as good as premium brands?

The purpose of mid-range tyres is to offer a balance between quality and economy. They are durable enough for everyday use without having a high overhead cost, unlike premium tyres, which prioritise performance without trying to keep prices down.

As a result, premium tyres are usually more durable and better performing than mid-range tyres.

What are the best mid range tyres?

A few mid-range tyres we recommend in our brand reviews are:

My car is fitted with Kormoran Road tyres. They look good and provide a reliable grip on wet roads for a reasonable price. Drivers have awarded them 4.7 stars out of 5 on Tyre Seeker based on 97 reviews (at the time of writing), and I would buy them again.

What is a good mid range tyre brand?

Each mid-range tyre brand offers something different, so the answer to this question depends on factors such as how often you drive, what sort of terrain you drive on and how many miles you cover. Uniroyal, for example, specialises in wet weather performance.

Some of the best mid-range brands are Avon, Firestone and Hankook.

Are RoadX tyres mid range?

RoadX is a budget tyre brand; you can read our full review of RoadX tyres here. Or check out this guide for more information about whether budget tyres are any good.
