FixMyCar explores common problems with the BMW M2 and average repair costs.

Boasting 0-60mph in just 4.1 seconds and 453 horsepower, the latest iteration of the BMW M2 is impressive on all fronts. If you’re a fan of the stylish 2 series but fancy something with a bit more go (and all the gadgets to match), this might be the sportscar for you. However, with so many accomplished rivals around - we’re thinking in particular of the Porsche Boxster and Audi RS3 - you need to be sure you’re getting a car that’s as reliable as it is fast, especially since BMW’s offering comes with a comparatively high price tag. As with any vehicle, drivers have identified a few common problems with the M2, such as:

Generally, this model holds up reasonably well against rivals and is a shining example of BMW’s overall reliability.

BMW M2 recent recalls

It is a testament to the overall reliability of the M2 that BMW has issued just one recall since the car went on sale in 2016.

BMW M2 N55 engine problems

Most of the engine problems experienced by M2 owners are common to BMW cars in general rather than the M2 specifically. For example, the valve cover and its gasket often develop oil leaks as they age. Typically, the gasket starts leaking first, but lifting the plastic cover to replace it could cause it to crack; that’s why it’s best to replace both parts simultaneously. The rubber oil pan gasket is also prone to leaks.

Signs of an oil leak can include:

If you’ve noticed these symptoms, you could have an oil leak on your hands.

The repair cost depends on the leak's extent and location; however, the average cost of a car fluid leak repair when booked through FixMyCar is £67.16.

In addition to general BMW engine problems, there are a few that are specific to the M2’s N55 engine, which are listed below:

  • VANOS solenoid failure

  • Leaking oil filter housing gasket

  • Water pump failure

  • Boost and charge pipe detaching/breaking from the throttle

  • Valve cover oil leak

It should be noted that generally, BMW M2 engine failure is rare, and the N55 engine has a reputation for being reliable.

BMW M2 indicator problems

M2s are known for sometimes developing indicator problems. Often, the rear right indicator malfunctions, resulting in an intermittent warning message. Other symptoms may include:

  • Turn signal blinks rapidly

  • Turning light bulbs do not work at the front or rear

  • The turn signal indicator comes on and stays on

Several things, such as a bad turn signal switch, bulb, flasher relay or wire, can cause faulty indicators. If any of the above symptoms apply to your car, you should have a mechanic check the problem as soon as possible.

Not only is it dangerous to drive without fully functioning indicators, but your car will also fail its MOT.

The average quote for an electrical repair when booked through FixMyCar is £65.51.

BMW M2 horn problems

Several drivers have reported issues with the horn of their M2, which fails to make any noise when pressed. A bad relay, blown fuse, broken clockspring, faulty horn or broken wire may cause this problem.

These potential issues fall under the category of an electrical repair, which, as mentioned above, costs £65.51 on average when you book through FixMyCar.

BMW M2 DCT transmission problems

The dual-clutch transmission (DCT) unit is strong, but unfortunately, that doesn’t mean it’s the most reliable, especially since it’s considerably more complex than most standard transmissions.

Common DCT issues include:

  • Shaking/shuddering

  • Transmission overheating

  • Hesitation/delayed shifting

Some driving habits are known to decrease the life of this kind of transmission, such as putting the vehicle in neutral while idling at traffic lights, which isn’t necessary.

You should investigate unusual symptoms because they will only worsen with time. The average quote for transmission repairs on FixMyCar is £367.52.

BMW M2 water pump failure

As discussed earlier, water pump failure is a common problem in the M2. This component is responsible for circulating coolant around the engine and radiator; if it breaks or malfunctions in any way, this is an urgent issue that needs repairing.

Look out for the following symptoms of a failing water pump:

  • Coolant leaks

  • Overheating engine

  • Steam from under the bonnet

  • High-pitched whining noises

The average quote for a water pump replacement on FixMyCar is £341.14.

Is the M2 unreliable?

Drivers have picked up on a few common issues with the BMW M2, but most of these are minor and only occur in rare instances. Quality control is a top priority at BMW factories, which shines through in the M2.

In WhatCar?’s 2019 reliability survey, BMW came 21st out of 31 manufacturers, while the 2 Series range excelled, coming top of the table in the coupe category.

Unfortunately, the model wasn’t tested by Euro NCAP during its production.

Is the M2 more fun than the M4?

The M2 is undoubtedly a fun car to drive, but the performance levels of the M4 are much higher; it is bigger, more powerful and faster thanks to its twin-turbo unit. However, the M4 is also more expensive to buy and run.

Is the M2 a good daily driver?

One of the M2’s strengths is that it offers a balance between a sports car and a car used daily for commuting and chores. It is fast and powerful, but the interior is also reasonably comfortable, and there’s space in the boot that comes in handy, too.

The answer to this question depends on who will use the car; for some, the M2 will be too harsh to use every day since it has a particularly firm ride, and the fuel economy isn’t anything to shout about. However, it does offer a compromise between style, speed and practicality.
