WhoCanFixMyCar uncovers some of the common problems that drivers have reported with the MG ZS, and how much it costs on average to get them repaired.

The MG ZS is a subcompact crossover SUV produced by Chinese automaker SAIC Motor under the British MG make. First introduced in 2016, the ZS is still a fairly new model, though it has proven to be a popular choice amongst drivers and is currently the brand’s highest selling model across international markets.

Despite this however, some drivers have reported some issues with the model. Some of the common problems with the MG ZS include:

MG ZS engine problems

How reliable is the MG ZS?

MG ZS engine problems

There have been several reports of problems with the engine on the MG ZS, whereby drivers have experienced a loss in engine performance, engine noise, as well as frequent misfires in some cases.

A loss in engine power accompanied by other symptoms could be caused by a number of different potential problems going on. However, one of the most common causes is a clogged component somewhere in the vehicle, such as the air filter, fuel filter or catalytic converter. Any one of these components can easily become blocked with debris over time, resulting in an overall decline in engine performance.

In order to find out the exact cause of the problem, a trained specialist will need to inspect your car for you.

The average quote for an engine repair on the MG ZS is £169.29 when booked through WhoCanFixMyCar.

MG ZS head gasket problems

There have also been reports of faults with the head gasket on the MG ZS. The cylinder head gasket is reportedly prone to failure on the MG ZS, which can cause your car to lose coolant and overheat as a result. Additionally, a blown head gasket means that your engine has to work harder in order to produce power, putting greater strain on the engine and causing more damage to the component.

If your car is suffering from a blown head gasket, you should get it checked out by a mechanic right away to avoid causing irreparable damage.

The average quote for a head gasket repair on the MG ZS is £382.00 when booked through WhoCanFixMyCar.

MG ZS suspension problems

Another problem reported with the MG ZS is with the model’s suspension system. It’s been reported that the front suspension is prone to wear on the ZS, which has resulted in drivers noticing noises coming from the vehicle particularly when driving over bumps in the road.

When your suspension fails, your car will start to feel off balance and you will likely begin to notice more of an impact when driving over the road surface than you did before. This would indicate that your suspension system is damaged, and should be checked out and repaired by a trained specialist as soon as possible in order to avoid additional damage from being made.

While we haven’t yet enough data to provide an average repair quote for this particular model, suspension repairs for other models of MG cars on our platform have cost £139.57 on average when booked through WhoCanFixMyCar.

Is the MG ZS reliable?

Despite being the best-selling car model from the Chinese automaker, the MG ZS fares disappointingly in owner satisfaction and reliability.

In the 2022 owner satisfaction survey carried out by Car Buyer, MG finished in 28th place out of a total 29 manufacturers, with 35.2% of MG owners reporting a fault in their first year of ownership being a large contributing factor in this. As well as this, the model itself placed 61st out of a total 75 cars in the survey due to reports of unreliability as well as poor build quality. With regards to safety, the MG ZS has also failed to match the standard set by its rivals. In the Euro NCAP 2017 crash test, the ZS scored a mediocre three out of five stars overall, as well as scoring a more alarming 71% and 51% for adult and child occupant safety respectively.
