FixMyCar discusses common problems with the Vauxhall Insignia and average repair costs.

First launched in 2008, the Insignia is a mid-sized family car produced by British automaker Vauxhall, which can be purchased as a saloon or hatchback model. Despite its popularity over the years, production of the Insignia came to an end in late 2022, with the model now being fully discontinued in European markets. Following that, Vauxhall reportedly has plans for the model to return as an EV by 2026.

Some drivers have however reported some issues with the model. Some of the common problems with the Vauxhall Insignia include:

How reliable is the Vauxhall Insignia?

Vauxhall Insignia gearbox problems

There have been several reports of problems with the gearbox on the Vauxhall Insignia. Drivers have reported issues with changing gears on the model, noticing some resistance when attempting to slot it into one gear from another which is often accompanied by noises.

When your transmission becomes difficult to shift, it can be pinpointed to a number of possible causes, however the most likely causes are a transmission fluid leak or a failing clutch. In order to find out the exact root of the problem, a trained mechanic will need to inspect the car for you.

The average quote for a gearbox repair on the Vauxhall Insignia is £870 when booked through FixMyCar.

Vauxhall Insignia dual-mass flywheel problems

The Vauxhall Insignia is also reportedly prone to suffering problems with its dual-mass flywheel. This is one of the most reported issues with the model, with drivers noticing symptoms from a juddering clutch, to noises coming from the gearbox when selecting another gear.

When your dual-mass flywheel fails, it can no longer protect against the torsional vibrations of the engine, which is why you might notice vibrating and juddering movements. Unfortunately if you have got this problem, it can be pricey to repair.

The average quote for a clutch and dual-mass flywheel repair on the Vauxhall Insignia is £1,154.23 when booked through FixMyCar.

Vauxhall Insignia airbag problems

Another problem reported with the Vauxhall Insignia is with the model’s airbags. This resulted in Vauxhall announcing a recall on Insignia models manufactured before November 2010, due to a fault with the airbag module which could become separated from its mounting and fail to deploy in the event of a collision.

It goes without saying that this could be a very serious fault if your model has been affected, so be sure to check this with your local dealer.

The average quote for an airbag repair on the Vauxhall Insignia is £160.

Is the Vauxhall Insignia reliable?

Despite being seemingly popular in the car market, the Insignia fared poorly in its driver reviews. In the 2015 Auto Express Driver Power survey, the Insignia came in a low position of 170th place in the reliability category, as well as 159th place for overall build quality.

Vauxhall scored disappointingly as a manufacturer too, placing 29th out of a total 30 manufacturers in the 2020 Driver Power customer satisfaction survey, increasing slightly to 24th place in 2021. With regards to safety however, the Insignia managed to bring its reputation back scoring five out of five stars in Euro NCAP’s 2017 crash test of the model, scoring 93% and 85% for adult and child occupant safety respectively.
