Volvo C30

FixMyCar discusses common problems with the Volvo C30 and average repair costs.

The C30 is a three door compact premium hatchback first manufactured in 2006 by Swedish automaker Volvo. While production of the C30 came to an end in 2013, with the model being discontinued thereafter, there are still many vehicles of this model on the roads.

Some owners of the C30 have encountered some issues with the model during their ownership however.

Volvo C30 gearbox problems

There have been a number of reports of problems with the gearbox on the Volvo C30. A recall on the model was announced in 2010 for this problem due to a known issue with the gear shift mechanism, which over time may become jammed and prevent the driver from changing gears.

To find out if your vehicle was affected by this recall, contact your chosen dealership for more information.

Volvo C30 clutch problems

There have also been reports of faults with the clutch on the Volvo C30. This problem relates to the component connecting the clutch master cylinder and the clutch pedal, which may be prone to breakage on some models of the C30.

When this problem occurs, it may not be possible to disengage the clutch, which could present a safety risk if this occurs when driving. Another recall was announced on the Volvo C30 in 2011 as a result of this fault.

The average quote for a clutch repair on the Volvo C30 is £639.17 when booked through FixMyCar.

Volvo C30 brake problems

Another problem reported with the Volvo C30 is with the model’s brakes. Due to a fault, the brake assistance may not work effectively in cold start conditions, which can require additional pressure to be applied to the brake pedal in order for them to function as they should.

This problem also resulted in a recall on some affected C30 models back in 2009, which required a part of the vacuum pump to be replaced in order to rectify this issue. As with all recalls, the owner will be notified if their model has been affected by this fault, but it’s always worth checking with your dealer if you’re unsure if the work has been carried out.

The average quote for a brake repair on the Volvo C30 is £278.87 when booked through FixMyCar.

Volvo C30 engine problems

Another problem drivers have reported with the Volvo C30 relates to an issue with the engine overheating. In some cases, certain models of the C30 have been known to overheat, caused by the hose connection between the coolant expansion tank and the bleed hose coming loose.

When this happens, it can cause coolant to leak out and air to enter the system, which as a result, can cause the engine to overheat.

Is the Volvo C30 reliable?

Volvo is globally renowned for its reputation for safety, with the brand’s cars being widely considered as some of the safest on the road. This is made evident in the most recent crash test carried out by safety experts Euro NCAP, where the Volvo C30 managed to achieve a five out of five star safety rating.

While it may appear slightly concerning that the model has picked up a total of 18 separate recalls since its production, it has been said that Volvo are notorious for announcing recalls on vehicles when only a very small number of vehicles were actually affected.

Back in 2015, the C30 did however place fairly low in the Auto Express Driver Power Survey coming in 162nd place, an even bigger drop from the previous year in 118th place.
