WhoCanFixMyCar explains what is an aircon regas and how much it should cost by manufacturer

Most modern cars now have air conditioning fitted as standard to help keep passengers comfortable during their journey.

An air conditioning system works by using refrigerant gas to push air through several components in the aircon system and then into your car. This ensures that whatever the weather outside your car, at least inside, driving conditions will be bearable.

The first and most obvious sign that you require an aircon regas is that the air being blown out the vents is not as cool as it should be. Or the car feels exactly the same as when the aircon is switched off.

The majority of car manufacturers recommend an aircon regas service every two years. However, most drivers put the job off until the component stops working, even though the cost is relatively small.

While this is only natural, it will, for instance, mean the car has to work harder (and use more fuel) to produce cold air to keep you cool during the summer months or alternatively make demisting the windows more difficult as we head towards winter.

Another thing to consider is that over 10 per cent of aircon gas escapes through the system each year. Therefore, the longer you leave it, the less effective the system.

Not only that, but putting off an aircon regas for a long period could result in damage to your car, such as cracking pipes or seized up parts, leading to additional costs.

What is involved in an aircon regas?

Recharging your air conditioning isn't complex. It shouldn't take more than 45 minutes - giving you ample time to grab a coffee and catch up on the latest news on your phone while you wait.

The mechanic will carry out a leak check on your air con system before the repair work to ensure the job can be carried out without causing damage to the car. As soon as this is complete, they will crack on with recharging the system.

Step 1

The mechanic carrying out the work will first remove old refrigerant from your car as well as the current gas and lubricant.

Step 2

They will then replace it with new gas and lubricants. The job will also typically include an entire system clean out which is carried out to remove any bacterial build up. This is often the reason for a strange or unpleasant smell being emitted from the air conditioning which is why it's important to have this job completed every two years.

Once that's done, it's a case of getting behind the wheel and breathing in the benefits of an aircon regas, especially if you've not had one done for a number of years. You will be able to smell the difference!
