WhoCanFixMyCar compare the maintenance costs of the most popular hybrid car in the UK, the Toyota Prius, with four other similar petrol cars, to find out which is the best value for money

Hybrid vs Combustion: Which should I buy?

Buying a hybrid car sounds like a no-brainer, right? Well before you order a shiny new hybrid vehicle, take a read of what we have revealed from our service and repair data so you are fully up to speed on maintenance costs before signing on the dotted line.

To help you make an informed decision, we have compared the maintenance costs of the most popular hybrid car in the UK, the Toyota Prius, with four other similar cars, the; BMW 3-Series, Audi A4, Volkswagen Passat and Ford Mondeo.

So how do they compare?

Steering and suspension repairs are significantly more expensive for a hybrid

Hybrid cars graph 1

When comparing the Toyota Prius with the Audi A4, Ford Mondeo, VW Passat and BMW 3 Series, we found that its costs were significantly higher than all other models.

For steering and suspension repairs, with an average cost of £260.70, the Prius is 38.06 per cent (£99.20) more expensive than the Ford Mondeo (£161.50), 27.77 per cent (£185.70) more than the VW Passat, 27.68 per cent (£188.54) more than the 3 Series and 22.18 per cent (£202.90) more than the Audi A4.

The Toyota Prius is on a par with a BMW 3 Series for brake and exhausts

As you can see, the Prius (£198.18) has similar repair costs when compared to the BMW 3-Series (£197.09) for brake and exhaust work.

However, it is significantly more expensive than the Ford Mondeo (£167.12), VW Passat (£172.48) and Audi A4 (£178.57).

Don’t lose the keys to your Toyota Prius

Finally, we checked the price differentials when it comes to security, locking and key repairs. As you can see from our graph above there is a major difference between the Toyota Prius and the other models. We’re not just talking a few quid here.

The average price of repair for the Toyota Prius is £328.95 while the other models have an average cost of:

  • VW Passat – £92.70

  • Ford Mondeo – 107.30

  • Audi A4 – £117.52

  • BMW 3-Series – £130.63

The bottom line is, don’t lose your Prius keys!

So, hybrid or combustion? Which one is it to be?

We’ll leave that decision up to you of course but never discount the impact of service, maintenance and repair costs when thinking about your next car.

Although you may be saving on fuel, tax and congestion charges by owning a hybrid, you definitely need to factor in the cost of things such as repairs during the time you own that vehicle.
