The UK is a nation of dog lovers, with over 13 million four-legged friends sharing our homes – and, often, a spot in our cars. Whether you need to accommodate a dachshund or a Great Dane, finding the right vehicle for the job is no easy feat. So, we’ve put together this guide to the 10 best dog-friendly cars.

1. Kia Sportage

First up is the Kia Sportage. Not only is it spacious and well-built, but it also offers excellent value for money. For a starting price of around £28k, you get seven seats, generous boot space, and impressive rear leg room – you don’t get much more dog-friendly than that. It’s also available with accessories to suit your four-legged friends, including a dog guard and boot liner.
What Car? has awarded the Sportage a five-star rating, along with the title of Family SUV of the Year.
2. Volkswagen Passat Estate

The VW Passat Estate and Skoda Superb Estate have the same dimensions, making them equally matched in terms of boot space and other key metrics. Crucially, the Passat has a higher quality interior, which means it’ll handle the rough and tumble of housing a dog without as much visible wear.
In addition to its sizeable boot, the Passat is robust, safe and comfortable, making it the ideal vehicle for both dogs and their owners.
3. Skoda Superb Estate

The Superb Estate comes in a close third place. The interior and boot provide ample space, and Skoda offers a dedicated Pet Pack, which includes a rear bumper protector, a dog guard, and a boot mat or rubber boot liner.
As you’d expect from a Skoda model, the Superb is extremely practical, designed using the “simply clever” philosophy. That said, the interior quality isn’t as good as in the Passat, and the Superb’s overall rating is slightly lower.
4. Dacia Jogger

Next up is the Dacia Jogger, the cheapest seven-seater on the market. Although the boot size isn’t impressive with the seats up, it expands to almost 700 litres with the rear seats down. The square shape of the boot makes it easy to load dogs.
If you’ve got multiple four-legged companions, you can fold down the second-row seats and remove the two rear ones to create a sizeable cargo area.
Overall, the Jogger is an excellent option for pet owners working on a tight budget.
5. Tesla Model Y

Tesla’s Model Y is one of the best dog-friendly EVs. It has an impressively large boot and a long range between charges. Although there are no official accessories for the boot, you can get an optional pet liner for the rear seats, and the air conditioning even has a ‘Dog Mode’ to keep your companion cool if they’re left alone in the car for a little while.
The main downsides to the Model Y are its price and lacklustre ride comfort.
6. Skoda Enyaq

Like the Superb Estate, the Enyaq is available with Skoda’s Pet Pack, making it an attractive option for dog owners, especially given its spacious boot and practical design. Importantly, the Enyaq is comfortable, pleasant to drive, and has decent range.
7. Mercedes E-Class Estate

The E-Class is undoubtedly a more upmarket option, which means the price is higher than many of the other models we’ve explored in this list, but for dog owners with a little more cash to spend, it might be worth it.
The boot is large and low enough that even more senior dogs will be able to jump inside easily. The estate version has much softer suspension than the saloon, resulting in a supremely comfortable ride. There are even handy hooks and ties to secure a dog crate in the boot.
8. Kia EV6

The EV6 won the Best Car for Dog Owners award at the Auto Trader New Car Awards 2024, earning praise for its spacious interior. In addition to being spacious, it’s also highly reliable and has over 300 miles of range.

Another electric vehicle worth considering is the Ioniq 5. The boot is wide and doesn’t have a load lip, providing easy access for a dog to jump in. Although it doesn’t offer quite as much boot space as some rivals, it boasts an impressive range of almost 300 miles. Super-fast charging speeds are the cherry on top.
10. Land Rover Discovery

It takes only a glance to know that the Land Rover Discovery is more than capable of transporting multiple pets safely and comfortably. Like Skoda, Land Rover offers an optional pet pack to keep your furry companions happy. It includes a ramp to assist them in getting in and out, as well as a portable shower. After spending over £60k on your car, you’ll probably want to keep it clean!
