The Toyota Aygo, undoubtedly one of the best-known city cars, was launched in 2005 and is now in its third generation, known as the Aygo X. It has evolved in style and technology over the years, moving from a minimalist city car to a more refined, crossover-inspired model while retaining its trademark reliability and low running costs.

This owners’ guide compiles key information about your Aygo in one convenient place, covering service intervals, recommended tyre pressures, and answers to frequently asked questions to help you keep your car running smoothly.

The original Toyota Aygo was developed alongside the Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1 as part of the B-Zero project. It had compact dimensions and a lightweight structure, making it perfect for city driving.

The base Aygo model came with essential features, including a CD player, ABS and two airbags. The other trim options were Aygo+, Sport, Black, Blue, Ice, Go!, and, at the top end of the range, Platinum, which included 14-inch alloys, leather seats, air conditioning, six airbags and electric front windows.

Facelifts in 2009 and 2012 introduced design tweaks and updated features.

Body styles:

  • Three-door hatchback

  • Five-door hatchback

Key engine options:

  • 1.0-litre 67bhp VVT-i petrol

  • 1.4-litre 54bhp D-4D diesel

The second generation of the Aygo was inspired by Japanese Manga culture and featured a bold design headed at the front by a prominent ‘X’ motif. Personalisation became a key theme, with plenty of customisation options.

There were five trim levels to choose from, starting with x, which came with 14-inch steel wheels and LED daytime running lights. The next step up was x-play, which added air conditioning, an X-Touch multimedia system with a reversing camera, Bluetooth connectivity, and a leather steering wheel. The top-spec model was x-clusiv, featuring 15-inch alloys, partial leather trim, smart entry, automatic air conditioning and lights, and privacy glass.

A 2018 facelift gave the Aygo a more modern look, with a revised front end and redesigned instrument cluster, plus a new seven-inch infotainment system in higher-end models.

The Aygo X, launched in 2022, adopted a new crossover design, offering a higher driving position and increased ground clearance. Built on Toyota's GA-B platform, it was initially powered by an updated 1.0L three-cylinder petrol engine producing 72 bhp.

In 2025, Toyota unveiled a mid-life update for the Aygo X, transitioning to a hybrid-only powertrain. The new 1.5L petrol-electric hybrid system, borrowed from the Yaris, delivers 114 bhp. Design updates include a longer body to accommodate the hybrid system, new LED headlights, and interior enhancements such as a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and wireless smartphone charging on higher trims.

The entry-level trim, Pure, comes with 17-inch alloys, a seven-inch infotainment touchscreen, a reversing camera, adaptive cruise control, Pre-Collision System and Emergency Steering Assist. Exclusive is the top-of-the-range trim, with a 9-inch touchscreen, Smart Entry and Touch Button Start, wireless phone charging, and front and rear parking sensors.

What are the tyre pressures for a Toyota Aygo?

The recommended tyre pressure varies depending on the spec and engine of your car. The table below shows tyre sizes and pressures listed for the Aygo on TyrePressures.com

However, you should always check this information before adjusting your tyres. You can find the correct pressures:

  • In your vehicle handbook/owner’s manual.

  • Printed on the sill of the driver’s door.

  • On the inside of the fuel tank cap.

The tyre pressure reset method varies depending on the year and spec of your Aygo. If unsure, check your owner’s manual.

Models without infotainment touchscreen

  • Make sure your tyres are inflated to the correct pressure.

  • Switch the ignition on.

  • Open the glovebox. Inside, you’ll find the tyre pressure reset button, which shows the same symbol as the warning light with the word ‘SET’.

  • Press and hold the reset button.

  • When the warning light starts flashing, you can release the button.

  • The tyre pressures have now been reset.

Models with infotainment touchscreen

In most cases in the Aygo X, inflating the tyres while the engine is on will automatically reset the warning light. If this doesn’t work, here’s how to reset the Tyre Pressure Warning System (TPWS) manually.

  • Switch the ignition on.

  • Press the down arrow on the steering wheel controls until you reach the settings.

  • Scroll through the options and select ‘vehicle settings’.

  • Scroll down to the TPWS settings.

  • Press and hold ‘OK’ to reset.

Engine oil

It’s crucial to use the correct engine oilfind out why in this guide

The recommended oil can vary between different Aygo engine configurations and depending on whether the car uses petrol or diesel. Your owner’s manual will provide information about the right oil for your vehicle

5W-30 and 0W-20 are two common oil grades used in some versions of the Aygo.

ViscocityUsage notes
0W-20 Preferred for newer petrol engines (especially hybrids). Improves fuel economy and cold-start performance.
5W-30 Used widely in petrol engines and sometimes diesel. Still common and reliable.
5W-40Sometimes used for diesel or turbo engines in certain markets.

What is the oil capacity of a Toyota Aygo?

Oil capacity varies depending on the engine size and model year. The Aygo requires between three and 3.5 litres of oil.

When topping up, remember to add oil gradually and check the dipstick to avoid overfilling. Too much oil puts more pressure on seals and gaskets and can lead to increased friction between parts.

Battery

What battery do I need for my Toyota Aygo?

The table below shows the battery requirements of Toyota Aygo engine variants using information from What Battery. The base hold-down is B13.

Things to consider when choosing a battery for your Toyota Aygo

  • Check your engine type and year. Battery requirements can vary.

  • Identify if your car has a start-stop system. If it does, you’ll need an AGM or EFB battery.

  • Match the physical dimensions. It’s important to choose a battery that fits your car.

  • Check battery specifications. Ampere hours (Ah) is a measure of capacity; cold cranking amps (CCA) indicates starting power.

  • Check the hold-down type. Most models use B13.

  • Verify compatibility. Cross-reference with your owner’s manual to ensure you choose the right battery.

Warning lights

What do the warning lights mean on a Toyota Aygo?

Dashboard warning lights are triggered by the car’s electronic control unit (ECU) when a problem is detected. You can learn some information by looking at the shape and colour of the light, but for a detailed diagnosis, you’ll usually need to book a diagnostic test

  • Red lights indicate a severe problem. You should stop driving and contact a mechanic.

  • Yellow lights are less urgent – you can continue driving to your destination, but you should book your car into a garage.

Learn more about car warning lights and what they mean in this guide.

Toyota Aygo warning lights you might not know

Toyota service reminder

The service reminder warning light looks like a spanner with an exclamation mark in front of it. It switches on when you’ve covered the recommended service interval mileage, reminding you to book a service soon. Once you’ve done this, you can reset the light.

The service reminder light is handy because it means you don’t have to track your mileage since the last service or try to remember a particular date.

Toyota Brake Override System warning light

This warning light shows a foot pressing down on a pedal, with a large rectangle to the right (representing the accelerator) and a curved arrow pointing to the foot. It indicates that the accelerator and brake pedals are being pressed simultaneously. When you see it, you should release the accelerator.

However, if the light flashes, it signals a malfunction with the Brake Override System. Take your car to a Toyota specialist for a diagnosis.

Spotted a warning light but don’t know what’s causing it? Don’t guess – book a diagnostic test!

Common problems

Whether you’re already a proud Aygo owner or you’re in the market for one, it’s helpful to know what kind of problems the model experiences. Our Toyota Aygo common problems guide explores this topic in detail, so we’ll just cover two top issues here.

1. Premature clutch wear

clutch components

Clutch problems are common in Aygos, especially first-generation models. Owners have reported early clutch failures, sometimes occurring as soon as a few years after purchase. The issues often stem from the use of smaller 180mm clutches in early models.

Toyota addressed this by introducing a more robust 190mm clutch in 2009. However, even second-generation models have experienced some issues, including high biting points and sudden failures – though these problems are now much less common.

2. Water leaks

Water leaks are another common concern, especially in the boot and front footwells. These leaks are often due to faulty or misfitted seals around doors, tailgates, rear lights and air vents.

Fixing leaks is relatively simple, but if the problem goes ignored, it can lead to mould, condensation and electrical issues. Fortunately, Toyota has implemented fixes for some affected vehicles.

If you’re in the market for a used Toyota Aygo, check the door seals for signs of wear and see if any of the carpets feel damp before you decide to buy.
