The Vauxhall Zafira is a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) beloved by families for its flexible seven-seat configuration and almost unrivalled practicality. Due to the rapid rise in popularity of SUVs, it was discontinued in the UK in 2018, but plenty of used models are still available.
This owners’ guide compiles key information about your Zafira in one convenient place, covering service intervals, recommended tyre pressures, and answers to frequently asked questions to help you keep your car running smoothly.
Vauxhall Zafira generations
Vauxhall Zafira A 1999-2005
Launched in 1999, based on the Astra platform, the first-generation Zafira pioneered the innovative Flex7 seating system. This clever setup had two extra rear seats that folded away into the boot floor, allowing a five-seater to transform into a seven-seater within seconds. While the Zafira’s styling wasn’t particularly exciting, it earned praise for its family-friendly design and superior comfort. The cabin offered numerous handy storage cubbies and a savvy space‑saving layout.
A minor facelift in the early 2000s introduced small cosmetic changes to the front and rear bumpers, as well as the interior trim.

Service intervals

It’s generally recommended to get your car serviced once a year or at the mileage interval outlined in your owner’s manual. For example, this 2016 Vauxhall Zafira Tourer owner’s manual recommends servicing every 12 months or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Most modern Zafiras have a service display on the dashboard that indicates when an oil and filter change is required. The replacement interval can vary significantly depending on driving conditions.
You can view the service display by pressing “menu” on the indicator stalk and turning the adjustor wheel to select “remaining oil life”. The duration is indicated in a percentage.

Engine oil

It’s crucial to use the correct engine oil – find out why in this guide.
The recommended oil can vary between different engine configurations and depending on whether the car uses petrol or diesel. 5W-30 and 5W-40 are commonly used in the Zafira.
Your owner’s manual will provide information about the right oil for your vehicle.
Vauxhall oil specifications
Vauxhall specifies engine oil based on the engine type, age and emission control technology. For UK Vauxhall vehicles, GM (General Motors, Vauxhall's parent company before Stellantis) used a system called dexos to define oil standards.
| Specification | Used In | Typical Viscosity |
|---|---|---|
| dexos1 Gen2 | Modern petrol engines | 5W-30 or 0W-20 |
| dexos2 | Diesel and petrol engines, especially with DPF and catalytic converter | 5W-30 |
| GM-LL-A-025/GM-LL-B-025 | Older petrol and diesel engines without DPF | 5W-30 |
Vauxhall is now part of Stellantis, so oil specifications have started to shift away from dexos standards. Stellantis vehicles mostly follow the PSA B71 oil specifications.
What is the oil capacity of a Vauxhall Zafira?
Oil capacity varies depending on the engine size and model year. The Zafira requires between 4.5 and 6.0 litres of oil. Most common petrol units (1.6 & 1.8) take around 4.5 litres, while 2.0 diesel engines can go up to 6.0 litres, and the 1.4 T turbo typically sits at 5.0 litres.
When topping up, remember to add oil gradually and check the dipstick to avoid overfilling. Too much oil puts more pressure on seals and gaskets and can lead to increased friction between parts.
Battery

The table below shows suitable batteries for a selection of Vauxhall Zafira engine variants. You can find information about the correct battery for your vehicle in your owner’s manual.
| Generation | Fuel type | Engine(s) | Battery type | Typical size (LxWxH, mm) | Voltage | Capacity (Ah) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zafira Tourer | Petrol | 1.6 115bhp | Lead-acid | 207x175x190 | 12V | 52 |
| Zafira B | Petrol | 1.8 140bhp | Lead-acid | 212x175x190 | 12V | 52 |
| Zafira B | Diesel | 2.0 165bhp | AGM | 278x175x190 | 12V | 70 |
Things to consider when choosing a battery for your Vauxhall Zafira
Check your engine type and year. Battery requirements can vary.
Identify if your car has a start-stop system. If it does, you’ll need an AGM or EFB battery.
Match the physical dimensions. It’s important to choose a battery that fits your car.
Check battery specifications. Ampere hours (Ah) is a measure of capacity; cold cranking amps (CCA) indicates starting power.
Check the hold-down type. Most models use B13.
Verify compatibility. Cross-reference with your owner’s manual to ensure you choose the right battery.

Warning lights

What do the warning lights mean on a Vauxhall Zafira?
Dashboard warning lights are triggered by the car’s electronic control unit (ECU) when a problem is detected. You can learn some information by looking at the shape and colour of the light, but for a detailed diagnosis, you’ll usually need to book a diagnostic test.
Red lights indicate a severe problem. You should stop driving and contact a mechanic.
Yellow lights are less urgent – you can continue driving to your destination, but you should book your car into a garage.

Vauxhall Zafira warning lights you might not know
Vauxhall diesel particulate filter (DPF) warning light

The DPF warning light resembles a rectangular box with dots inside and a pipe extending from each end. It switches on when there is an issue with the diesel particulate filter, which is designed to reduce harmful exhaust emissions. The problem is that the filter is full and needs to regenerate (self-clean), or the filter is blocked, requiring a professional DPF clean.
Driving with a blocked DPF doesn’t just increase the harmful pollutants coming from your exhaust; it can also damage other engine parts. If you ignore the problem, you may have to replace the filter rather than clean it, which is far more expensive. That’s why it’s best to contact a mechanic as soon as possible.
Find out how to avoid DPF problems in this guide.
Vauxhall tyre pressure warning light

The tyre pressure warning light looks like a cross-section of a tyre (a horseshoe-like shape) with an exclamation mark in it. Your tyre pressure fluctuates naturally depending on the external temperature, so the light could signal a loss of pressure without any additional problems, or it might be caused by a puncture.
You can continue driving, but you should check your tyres for punctures at the earliest opportunity and re-inflate them to the correct pressure.
If the warning light flashes, it indicates a problem with the tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), such as a malfunctioning sensor.
Spotted a warning light but don’t know what’s causing it? Don’t guess – book a diagnostic test!
Common problems
Here, we look at two common problems with the Vauxhall Zafira.
1. Diesel engine faults
There are a few issues to be aware of with diesel models, especially the 1.9-litre CDTi engine, including:
Blocked DPF – Using the car primarily for short, low-speed trips can cause blockages, requiring a professional DPF clean and, in some cases, a DPF replacement.
Failed water pump – when the water pump seizes, it can snap the cambelt, causing catastrophic engine damage.
Inlet manifold failures – leading to loss of power and misfires.
Unfortunately, repairs for these issues tend to be expensive, and in the case of engine damage due to a snapped cambelt could lead to a write-off.
2. Electrical problems
The Zafira’s electrical systems are also less than bulletproof. The Xenon headlights are known to fail, the infotainment system in newer models is notoriously glitchy, and there are reports of dashboard backlighting dropouts. While these issues aren’t as severe as some of the diesel engine faults, they can lead to repeated trips to the garage for repairs.
