It’s no secret that regular servicing is key to a healthy car. But where does a major service fit in? Often forgotten or overlooked, it helps keep your vehicle in good condition by covering checks and replacements that aren’t included in a full service.

If a major service isn’t already part of your maintenance schedule, this guide will explain what’s involved, why it matters and when to book in.

What is a major service?

Full service

There are three types of car service: interim, full and major. A major service is the most comprehensive option, providing an in-depth check of your vehicle’s health, along with the replacement of certain parts and fluids to keep your car in top condition.

What does a major service include?

A major service is a step up from a full service - it includes all the same things, plus additional inspections and replacements. The list of what’s included can vary between garages, so it’s worth checking when you compare prices to see which option is the most comprehensive.

The table below shows what is typically replaced in a full service versus a major service.

How long does a major service take?

A major service usually takes three to four hours. The total time depends on the make and model of your car, as well as its age and condition. The mechanic working on your vehicle will be able to provide an estimate of how long it will take.

How often should you book a major service?

It’s recommended to book a major service every two years or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first. This means any parts that need to be replaced every two years can be changed at the correct time.

If it’s been more than two years since your car was last serviced, you should book a major service

How much is a major service?

Major service prices typically range from £200 to £400. Factors affecting the cost include the age, make and model of car, as well as the labour rate.
