There’s a quiet revolution taking place in vehicle servicing and repairs. More and more drivers are turning to the web to compare garage pricing and reviews, and, after decades of reliance on local word of mouth, ever more garage businesses are focusing their efforts on building their profile, and reputation, online.
WhoCanFixMyCar.com has established itself as THE go-to website for UK motorists looking for local garage prices and reviews and, at 7pm on Friday 06 November, they reached the latest in a series of recent landmarks when their 7,000th garage – Nick Kerner 4 Wheel Drive Ltd in Winkfield – came on board.
Who are these 7,000 garages?
Although mechanical repairs (clutches, cambelts, servicing, brakes and exhausts) are WhoCanFixMyCar.com’s ‘heartland’, drivers also use the website to seek out specialists for a wide range of issues and special requests, as shown below.
As a result, WhoCanFixMyCar.com’s garage profile has evolved to take advantage of that rich variety of work. While the majority of members are ‘traditional’ independent garages, also in the mix are several hundred mobile mechanics, cosmetic and SMART repairers, bodyshops, transmission specialists, auto electricians and brand specialists (Nick Kerner 4 Wheel Drive are Land Rover specialists themselves). The Ford, Toyota, Lexus and KIA dealer networks have also joined in full and, with an ever-growing pool of work, it’s of little surprise that our garages supplied over 20,000 quotes last month.
How does it work?
WhoCanFixMyCar.com membership is simple: garages pay an annual subscription of just £79.99. After that, they can quote on an unlimited number of jobs – and contact drivers by phone – at no additional cost. They pay a small commission (£11 on average) whenever they win a new customer. Any upsell on the day is theirs to keep, with no further commission payable. With so many labour-intensive repair jobs such as clutch replacements available, the average final bill is a meaty £350.
Top performers, such as Automotive Components Specialist in Enfield, and Thomsons Auto Centre in East Kilbride, have now won hundreds of new customers, bringing in hundreds of thousands of pounds of incremental revenue. Newcomers are following in their footsteps every week, such as Ross Motors in Streatham (160 jobs won since January) and even niche specialists such as Leelac Saab and Volvo, whose clients regularly travel over 70 miles for the owner’s deep expertise.
What’s coming next?
Following a round of investment in August, barely a week goes by without the service evolving to further benefit our garages. For example, WhoCanFixMyCar’s ‘Auto-Quoting’ facility launched last week, meaning that members can quote on certain repair types instantly, without lifting a finger, even on evenings and weekends. Coming soon are redesigned and enhanced garage profile pages. Naturally enhancements of this nature are all built in to the £1.52 cost of weekly membership, and members are kept up to date by email with all the latest changes, so they can stay ahead of the game.
