Average quote for a tyre pressure sensor repair

Most modern cars have a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) that relies on sensors to detect the pressure within each tyre. The sensors send this information to the engine control unit (ECU), which alerts the driver with a dashboard warning light if the pressure drops too low.

Unfortunately, tyre pressure sensors can sometimes malfunction. Depending on the cause of the sensor failure, you might notice that your tyres look flat, but the system hasn’t notified you, or you might see a warning light appearing on the dashboard even though the tyres are at the correct pressure. If you’re experiencing either of these problems, you should book a TPMS repair.

Causes of tyre pressure sensor failure

The most common reason for failure is a flat battery. Each sensor has an internal battery designed to last around 100,000 miles. The more you use your car, the faster the battery depletes. However, it should last between five and seven years. Since most sensors have the battery sealed inside their casing, the whole sensor must be replaced.

Another problem for tyre pressure sensors is corrosion. Although the sensors are sealed inside the tyres, the valve stems stick out, exposing them to the elements. Salt used to grit roads can be particularly damaging, corroding the stems and making them brittle. When the valve stem is damaged, you must replace the whole sensor.

Can you drive with a bad tyre sensor?

You can drive with a bad sensor, but we wouldn’t recommend it for extended periods. In the long term, it’s best to arrange a repair to avoid driving on underinflated tyres, which increases fuel consumption and leads to premature wear.

Is a tyre pressure sensor an MOT fail?

Yes - if the TPMS isn’t working when your car goes for its MOT, this is a major defect, resulting in a fail. Here are the most common reasons for MOT failure and how to avoid them.

How much does it cost to fix a tyre sensor?

The average price of a tyre pressure sensor repair is £108.23, according to FixMyCar’s data.
