The clutch allows you to speed up or slow down when driving by changing gears. It does this by disconnecting the wheels from the engine and consists of three main components: the clutch plate, pressure plate and flywheel. Your car wouldn’t be able to get going without it.

It connects two rotating shafts - one that allows the engine to spin, another that turns the wheels - so they can be engaged, which means they are spinning at the same speed, and disengaged, meaning they are spinning at different speeds independently of one another.

Clutches usually last around 60,000 miles, sometimes more. Eventually, though, they do wear out and need replacing.

Symptoms of a worn clutch

It’s easy to tell if your clutch is worn because it will have a negative effect on your driving experience, usually displaying several noticeable symptoms.

Clutches are designed to make gear changes smooth. If you notice your car jerking, shaking or shuddering when you change gear, or if it becomes more difficult to move the gear stick into the correct position, it might be time for a clutch replacement.

Likewise, watch for issues with the clutch pedal - if it sticks to the floor, vibrates or feels spongy, these are all signs of a worn clutch. The same goes for poor acceleration and grumbling or squeaking noises when you press the pedal.

The final thing to look out for is clutch slipping, which feels like a momentary loss of acceleration accompanied by unusually high revs as your car slips out of gear. This guide provides more advice about how to tell if you need a new clutch.

How do you test a worn clutch?

You can perform a few tests to check whether your clutch is worn.

The first thing to focus on is the clutch pedal. Press it down with the car switched off and see how it feels. It should be relatively firm - neither easy nor hard to push. If it doesn't feel right, you may have a worn or faulty clutch, though other issues could also be to blame.

While you’re testing the pedal, listen for any unusual noises. You can also check these things while driving.

Next, try starting your car in a high gear. If you release the clutch and the engine immediately stalls, this is good because the clutch shouldn’t allow you to start in a high gear. If it doesn’t stall, try accelerating a little. It should stall after this, which is a sign that your clutch may be slightly worn but not severely. It’s probably time for a clutch replacement if it doesn't stall at all.

How much does it cost to fix a worn-out clutch?

You probably already know that clutch repairs can be expensive, costing between £400-600 due to the large amount of labour required. Repairing a clutch is sometimes possible, but it is complicated and may not be cheaper.
