About us
"Morley Group began when John Morley started his career as a journeyman coachpainter, travelling the country looking for work. He finally settled in the Newcastle area and worked for George and Jobling the coachbuilder. After rising to become chargehand painter he left and started his own business three days before the start of the general strike in 1926. The business initially concentrated on the refurbishment of commercial vehicles. After a quiet period during the second world war spare parts were difficult to obtain and Morley Coachworks was able to survive by refurbishing both cars and commercial vehicles. The increasing prosperity during the 1950s brought more vehicles on to the roads and increasing volume of business due to accidental damage. Repairs and modifications to commercial vehicles were continued although the methods employed were increasingly different. Modern technologies arrived in the 1960s with the installation of repair jigs for cars and Low Bake Stoving in heated booths for paint application. Developments of these tools were made over the next 20 years to the present day when we use environmentally friendly spray booths and water based paint. Computerisation adds to the sophistication of the repair jigs, wheel alignment equipment and of paint mixing. For 40 years Morleys were involved in the hiring of commercial vehicles. Starting from two second hand vans the fleet grew over the years to 700 in 1997, when the operation was sold to a multinational company. The workshop servicing was retained and still provides a professional repair and servicing operation to customers with either single vehicles or fleets. In 1999 a large spraybooth was added to paint commercial vehicles up to 40' long. This enhanced the body building facility which continues to offer a diverse range of products both construction and conversion. In 2006 Morley Group celebrated its 80th year of existance and still remains true to the aims of John Morley - providing the very highest standards of quality workmanship and customer care."
