Looming hundreds of feet up in Munich's skyline is BMW's headquarters, a vast and impressive building designed to look like four engine cylinders - the configuration that drove much of the brand's early success.
BMW has come a long way since 1927, when it produced its first car, the Dixi, shortly to be renamed the BMW 3/15. In 2022, it was awarded 'Best Manufacturer' at the AutoCar Britain's Best Car Awards, and the same year, it triumphed at the WhatCar? Awards, winning more accolades than any other brand. The M5 special edition, celebrating 20 years of BMW motorsport, is one of the rarest M automobiles in the world.
See how BMW's maintenance prices compare to Audi and Mercedes in this guide.
Car suspension features four coil springs, one for each wheel. They are designed to absorb shocks from the road, such as driving over a pothole or speed bump, and they work in conjunction with shock absorbers.
Eventually, coil springs become fatigued with age, which means they have endured many compression-extension cycles, causing the metal to become brittle. When this happens, it's time for a coil spring replacement. This job typically takes one to three hours for front springs and one to one and a half for rear springs.
A coil spring usually lasts between 60,000 and 90,000 miles. Signs you may need new springs include: excessive tyre wear, visible rust or corrosion on the springs, excessive leaning or swaying, compromised handling and worn or missing jounce bumpers. A rear or front coil spring repair is always done by replacing the springs; once the metal becomes brittle, it can't be repaired.
