What are Brakes?
To stop a vehicle, brakes are required to get rid of the kinetic energy. Brakes work through converting the kinetic energy created though your car moving, into heat. This process uses the force of friction which is generated when your brake pedal is pressed. The pedal then propels a piston into the master cylinder which is filled with brake fluid.
The amount of pressure applied by your foot when hitting the brake pedal is equal to the force of the brake fluid causing the vehicle to stop.
What are Exhausts?
Car exhausts have four main functions; they control the noise generated from your vehicle, prevent harmful fumes from reaching car passengers and improve your fuel consumption and engine performance.
Brake pads that need repair are easy to identify as they make a distinctive grumbling noise when you apply pressure to the brake pedal. This may then transform into a high-pitched squeak or screech once the pedal is released. Both are a sign of damage and should be treated efficiently.
It is important to repair brake pads quickly, or the damage will develop further resulting in an increasingly expensive repair job. For more information on how to tell when your brakes need servicing consult our in depth guide.
To keep costs low and ensure safety on the road, act fast in the event of worn brake pads.
How do I know that there is an issue with my exhaust?
Exhausts can corrode both interiorly and exteriorly. Akin to your brakes, problems with your exhaust can first be spotted by listening out for any strange or unfamiliar noises namely roaring or hissing.
Secondly, a visual examination of the exhaust checking for any cracks, holes or rust which appears to have permeated the inside of the cylinder can determine damage.
Your vehicle can not only fail its MOT but can also be taken off the road by police if it is producing excessive amount of harmful and polluting gases from the exhaust. Therefore, it is imperative that any exhaust problems are dealt with swiftly to ensure safety and lower repair costs.
