Over the years, Citroen has come up with more than a few quirky ideas. The second car it produced, the 1922 Type C 5HP, became known as the ‘petit citron' (little lemon) because of its small size and the yellow paint colour you could order it in. The Citroen Berlingo may not be the most stylish MPV on the road, but what it lacks in appearance, it more than makes up for in practicality, spaciousness and affordability. Not only is it cheap to buy, but it's also cheap to run and has relatively few common problems. Citroen has issued recalls relating to the steering column and seat belts in some models. The top-end diesel engine achieves 0-62 mph in 11 seconds with a top speed of 114 mph, and the petrol version is 0.5 seconds slower. In 2023, Auto Express awarded the Berlingo four stars out of five.
EGR stands for exhaust gas recirculation. The EGR valve links the intake manifold and the exhaust manifold. It plays a vital role in helping to reduce the amount of NOx emitted from a car. Learn more about how it works here.
Over time, EGR valves can become clogged due to a build-up of soot, and when this happens, an EGR valve clean or replacement is required. Common symptoms of an EGR fault include rough idling, erratic engine functioning (including stalling), increased fuel consumption and higher emissions.
Some manufacturers recommend using an EGR cleaning service every 50,000 miles; doing so helps prevent performance issues and extends the component's life.
EGR valves typically have a lifespan of around ten years. After this time, it's best to book an EGR valve replacement if you experience any of the symptoms listed above. A stuck EGR valve will speed up the process of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) becoming blocked.
