Over the years, Citroen has come up with more than a few quirky ideas. The second car it produced, the 1922 Type C 5HP, became known as the ‘petit citron' (little lemon) because of its small size and the yellow paint colour you could order it in. Since then, there has been the Citroen Picasso, taking inspiration from Pablo Picasso's use of shape. The Citroen DS 19 was the vehicle of choice for the French President Charles de Gaulle, who survived an assassination attempt in 1962 thanks to the car's superior suspension system, allowing his chauffeur to drive away after two of the tyres were shot.
Launched in 2006, the Citroen C1 shares components with the notoriously reliable Toyota Aygo, allowing it to compete with rival city cars like the Hyundai i10. It's cheap to run, with outstanding fuel economy and few common problems. The main things to look out for are issues with the infotainment system and worn interior components. Generally, the C1 is affordable to repair, though fixing bodywork damage can be costly relative to the price of the car. In WhatCar?'s 2023 reliability survey, it was the joint 8th most reliable small used car, matching the Skoda Citigo, though Citroen finished last for reliability as a brand.
Power steering is designed to reduce the effort required by the driver to turn the steering wheel. Without this system, the steering in your car would be extremely heavy, making it challenging to do low-speed manoeuvres.
Common problems requiring a power steering repair include low or leaking power steering fluid, loose or broken belts, worn hoses and a damaged pump. You should contact a power steering specialist if you notice any of the following symptoms:
- Stiff steering
- A squealing or whining noise
- Vibrations felt through the steering wheel
- Low or discoloured power steering fluid
