Over the years, Citroen has come up with more than a few quirky ideas. The second car it produced, the 1922 Type C 5HP, became known as the ‘petit citron' (little lemon) because of its small size and the yellow paint colour you could order it in. Since then, there has been the Citroen Picasso, taking inspiration from Pablo Picasso's use of shape. Citroen's latest iteration of the Picasso is much better looking than the earliest models, meeting the brief of any good MPV with flair thanks to its versatility and spaciousness (some reviewers have gone as far as to call the roomy cabin tardis-like). 2023 reliability data from WhatCar? puts Citroen in 14th place out of 32 car manufacturers, and this below-average score is reflected by the numerous common problems experienced by the Picasso, including oil leaks, faulty starter motors and worn suspension. Nevertheless, at the 2018 Auto Express Used Car Awards, it earned the title of 'Best Used MPV', with judges highlighting its outstanding comfort.
Ticking and rattling are two closely related noises you might hear from your car. If you listen closely to where the sound is coming from and when it happens (while accelerating, for instance), you might be able to work out the cause.
The first thing to check is whether the engine oil is low, requiring a top-up - this is the best-case scenario. If your car is rattling and the sound is coming from the engine, it could be caused by a loose serpentine belt or timing chain. From the car's rear, it might be a loose exhaust or a broken catalytic converter, and the other possibility is worn suspension, which can cause rattling from the front or rear of the vehicle.
Possible explanations for ticking include worn spark plugs, knocking engine rods, dirty valve lifters and misaligned valves. You can learn more about these issues here.
Ticking and rattling noises should be taken seriously as they sometimes indicate a problem with the engine that could cause further damage if ignored.
