Over the years, Citroen has come up with more than a few quirky ideas. The second car it produced, the 1922 Type C 5HP, became known as the ‘petit citron' (little lemon) because of its small size and the yellow paint colour you could order it in. The Citroen C4 has undergone significant changes to match the latest trends, morphing from a family hatchback to what is now closer to a coupe SUV. Older models have a reputation for dependability, though the semi-automatic ESG gearbox is notoriously jerky and tends to clunk into gear if you don't ease off the accelerator. There are also a few known electrical problems with the aircon and sat-nav systems in the Mk2 C4.
A direct shift gearbox offers an alternative to conventional automatic transmissions. It's an electronic dual-clutch system used by manufacturers in the Volkswagen group (including Skoda, SEAT and Audi) because it allows faster gear changes with a smooth flow of power that can help drivers save fuel.
Six and seven-speed direct shift gearboxes have proven highly reliable, but this reliability is aided by regular servicing. Most manufacturers recommend booking a DSG oil change and service every 40,000 miles.
The gearbox is examined for leaks and potential problems during a DSG service. Once this is done, the technician carries out a DSG transmission fluid and filter change. The benefits of a DSG oil change are numerous: it extends the life of the transmission, gives better fuel efficiency, allows for faster shifting, keeps your warranty valid for repairs (if you have one) and improves the performance of your vehicle.
