Over the years, Citroen has come up with more than a few quirky ideas. The second car it produced, the 1922 Type C 5HP, became known as the ‘petit citron' (little lemon) because of its small size and the yellow paint colour you could order it in. The Citroen C4 has undergone significant changes to match the latest trends, morphing from a family hatchback to what is now closer to a coupe SUV. Older models have a reputation for dependability, though the semi-automatic ESG gearbox is notoriously jerky and tends to clunk into gear if you don't ease off the accelerator. The engine management light (EML) - also referred to as the check engine light - is a small engine symbol that becomes illuminated on your dashboard to indicate a problem, the severity of which is suggested by the colour of the light (red or yellow) and whether it stays on or flashes (usually due to misfires).
Many things can trigger the EML. Some are easy to fix, such as a loose fuel cap, while others are more expensive, such as a faulty catalytic converter. One of the most common reasons is a defective oxygen sensor - if your car is also experiencing a drop in fuel efficiency and black smoke from the exhaust, this is likely why.
