Over the years, Citroen has come up with more than a few quirky ideas. The second car it produced, the 1922 Type C 5HP, became known as the ‘petit citron' (little lemon) because of its small size and the yellow paint colour you could order it in. Since then, there has been the Citroen Picasso, taking inspiration from Pablo Picasso's use of shape. Manufactured between 1997 and 2006, the Citroen Xsara is a small hatchback ideal for drivers with a limited budget. An MPV version - the Xsara Picasso - was launched in 1999. The Xsara hatchback has a decent amount of interior space and is cheap to run, delivering between 33 and 62 mpg, though poor reliability ensures regular trips to the garage. Worn brakes and clogged radiators are common, and you should also keep an eye out for clutch problems.
Car suspension features four coil springs, one for each wheel. They are designed to absorb shocks from the road, such as driving over a pothole or speed bump, and they work in conjunction with shock absorbers.
Eventually, coil springs become fatigued with age, which means they have endured many compression-extension cycles, causing the metal to become brittle. When this happens, it's time for a coil spring replacement. This job typically takes one to three hours for front springs and one to one and a half for rear springs.
A coil spring usually lasts between 60,000 and 90,000 miles. Signs you may need new springs include: excessive tyre wear, visible rust or corrosion on the springs, excessive leaning or swaying, compromised handling and worn or missing jounce bumpers. A rear or front coil spring repair is always done by replacing the springs; once the metal becomes brittle, it can't be repaired.
