Clutch Replacement
Frequently asked questions
+

What does a Clutch do?

The clutch is the part of your vehicle which connects and disconnects the shafts which come from your engine, with the shafts that come from your wheels. In basic terms, it is the mechanism which allows you to change gears and for your car to function properly.

+

What are the symptoms of clutch wear?

There are a number of common signs that your clutch needs to be replaced. Some of the most frequent problems include:

  • A high biting point which makes it difficult to change gears without stalling
  • A juddering feeling when the pedal goes up
  • Rising revs even when driving along flat roads at a constant speed
+

How long does it take to Change a Clutch?

It can take as little as two to three hours for the replacement process. The average labour time is around five hours, and the longest you can reasonably expect the process to take is seven hours. Thus, bare this in mind when booking in the job, it is a lengthy process and you may need to set aside a whole day.

+

Can a clutch be repaired?

Clutches can have parts repaired although a failing clutch will inevitable result in replacement as damage to the component on a whole is pretty much irreversible.

+

Do automatic cars have a clutch?

Automatic cars do have a clutch, although it is built-in. This component decides what gear you should be in giving the current driving conditions and the driver has no control over this function.

+

How long does a clutch last?

The lifespan of a clutch depends heavily upon your driving style. However, the majority of clutches are designed to last around 60,000 miles before needing a replacement. Of course, this number is by no means fixed as clutches can wear as prematurely as 30,000 miles and some can last much longer.

+

What is clutch slipping?

Slippage is where the heat generated between the two shafts increases. This area becoming extremely hot means it is less able it is to maintain its grip, thus increasing the slippage. Slippage will go away on its own and therefore an efficient replacement is needed.

Clutch Replacement

Clutch replacement is one of the most common repairs carried out by mechanics in the UK. The nature of the part means that it will naturally degrade over time, regardless of how much care you take or precautions you put in place.

The rate of degradation will alter due to anything from car model to car make as each are designed differently, with some cars having significantly superior parts. However, the way somebody drives a car is also a huge factor in how the component performs and lasts.

What is a clutch?

The Clutch is responsible for engaging and disengaging the power transmission. It is a vital part of the engine and connects two parts of the system that can’t make a car move unless they're connected. They engage and disengage the engine shafts and wheel shafts which then allow your car to move.

When you press the pedal down and move your car into gear, you are connecting the two shafts and transitioning from one gear to the next. The part provides an essential function which allows a car to move through gears effectively and efficiently.

Automatic cars have an in-built clutch which takes over the control of this interchange. This means that the car itself decides what gear you should be in depending on the driving conditions, regardless of the driver.

Does my clutch need replacing?

There are a variety of indicators to look out for when it comes to a worn clutch, as the performance of your car will be noticeably affected as well as your ability to change gears.

Here are the most common issues:

Slipping Clutch

Slipping can cause a huge drop in your car’s performance, as well as substantial damage, if not diagnosed in time.

Symptoms of slippage:

·      Your car struggles to move forward while moving at a low speed in a high gear.

·      Your car struggles to get up hills in a high gear

·      Your car struggles to accelerate or finds it difficult to tow a trailer

Slippage increases the heat generated in between the two shafts. The hotter this area becomes, the less able it is to maintain its grip, thus increasing the slippage. Slippage will not slow or revert; hence, an efficient replacement is needed to prevent more expensive damage.

Clutch Chatter

Chattering is a grabbing or jerking that can be felt in the vehicle when the clutch is engaged. This is caused by one or more of the following internal issues:

·      A warped or grooved flywheel

·      Missing flywheel dowel pins

·      Worn or damaged disc or input shaft splines

·      A bent or distorted clutch disc

·      Clutch linings becoming covered in oil grease or getting burned or glazed

·      Loose/broken engine or transmission mounts

·      Misalignment of the chassis and drivetrain components

·      Worn or damaged U-joints/CV joints

·      A loose transmission cross member

·      A worn or bent release fork

·      A loose rear left spring brushing or spring U-bolt nuts

Clutch Noise

Hearing strange noises whilst the component is in use like growls or squeals, can be another sign of a problem. Vibrations within the part would cause such unusual sounds, marking a sign of trouble. If you hear any strange noises coming from your car, have it looked at immediately as a fault poses serious danger while you are driving.
