What is a starter motor?

It is the component responsible for turning over or ‘cranking’ the engine to start the car. It is powered by the car battery, and battles both high friction and compression resistance to get your car up and running

The starter motor can be found underneath the car on the driver’s side, it is just below the left cylinders.

How long do starter motors last?

On average, a starter motor should function in your vehicle for 5 to 7 years. However, they can both die prematurely and last a lot longer than expected, often with no deciding factors.

What are the signs of a bad starter motor?

To decipher whether your starter motor is faulty you can look out for these telltale signs:

●     A clicking noise when key turned on switched to start

●     Smoke coming from the car

●     The starter is soaked in oil

●     The engine just will not crank

How long does starter motor replacement take?

The process of removing a faulty starter motor and replacing it with a new one generally takes around 2 to 4 hours. The length is dependent on how easy it is to access and remove the part.

What causes a starter to become faulty?
