Hi, my name is Kevin and I am a fully accredited ATA technician who has been working in this industry for almost 20 years. I operate as a mobile mechanic covering Surrey Sussex and Kent, coming to carry out repairs and servicing at a location and time to suit you. With being mobile, I have less overheads and so I can offer you a more competitively priced quote without compromising on the quality of my workmanship. I use good quality parts and all supplied parts come with a parts and labour warranty for your peace of mind.

I first started out working with main dealer Toyota, where I completed my apprenticeship and continued to work for 13 years. During my time there, the garage became a duel franchise of both Toyota and Citroen, and so I would say I have specialist knowledge of these two makes of cars.

Following my time there, I worked for a well-known local independent garage as a Senior Technician before deciding to start up my own garage. I developed my garage to a point where I had 5 staff working for me, however, I felt that this was not nearly as hands on as I enjoy and so I sold my business and have now decided to work alone as a mobile mechanic.

Frequently asked questions
+

How do I know if my brake pads are worn?

Brake pads make a distinctive noise when they need to be replaced. You may hear a screeching or squealing noise that doesn’t go away when you release the pedal. When braking, listen for a grumbling or grinding sound from your Peugeot.
+

Do my brake pads need replacing if they are worn?

Ignoring the noises your brakes are making can lead to an expensive repair job that includes new calipers and discs (sometimes called ‘rotors’). And, of course, worn pads reduce your Peugeot’s stopping power.
+

How do I know if my brake discs are worn or warped?

Typically Peugeot brake discs don’t need to be replaced as often as brake pads. However worn brake pads pressing against a brake disc can cause increased wear or ‘scoring’ of the surface - which is why it’s so important to replace pads when you spot signs of wear.
+

How far can I drive on warped or worn brake discs?

Worn or warped brake discs will affect your ability to stop your Peugeot. This is serious, so we’d always advise you to get your brake discs replaced as soon as you notice they are worn.
+

How dangerous are warped brake discs?

The vibrations caused by warped brake discs can damage calipers, bolts, brake pads and other essential components of your Peugeot's braking system. Given that an effective braking system is essential for road safety, brake wear cannot be ignored.
+

What are anti lock brakes?

The anti-lock braking system, abbreviated to ABS. Originally designed as an anti-skid system for aircraft in the 50s, the ABS works on cars by preventing the wheels from locking up and maintaining grip with the road.
+

What is brake fade?

Brake fade is the temporary reduction or complete loss of brake power. It's caused by a build up of heat, which causes friction on the surface of the brake pads preventing the pads from working correctly. For example if brakes are continuously pressed when going down a steep hill you may get to the bottom and realise the brakes are no longer working. Brake fade is extremely dangerous because while pressing your brakes it may feel like they are still working. Unexpected behaviour within the braking system such as increased stopping distance is a good indicator. To avoid brake fade it's best to drive steadily and reduce the gear rather than continuously press down on the brakes. If brake fade happens reduce gear to get to a speed where you can safely pull over. The brakes will be very hot from overheating but should be back to normal after cooling down for an hour.
+

When are anti lock brakes most effective?

The anti-lock braking system is most effective allowing the driver to steer the car when braking suddenly and stops all four wheels locking when the vehicle skids. ABS may be able to reduce the braking distance in an emergency however it is not to be used as a way to drive more quickly, or closer to the car in front. Ideally the correct precautions should be taken so that the ABS doesn't need to be used. It's worth noting that with ABS will not work on sheet ice and will struggle in wet conditions.
+

How to stop brakes from squeaking?

Put simply brakes squeaking are caused by vibrations between the components. If the brakes only squeal sometimes it could just be rust between the components, until the rust is scraped off that will continue to be the case. However if the brakes always squeal then it's likely the pads are worn right down to the metal and need changing.
+

How to check brake fluid?

The brake fluid reservoir is usually on the drivers side, near the firewall and connected to the brake master cylinder. It should be a plastic container. 1) Firstly clean the top of the reservoir while the lid is still on. This is to prevent dirt falling into the reservoir which can cause the brakes the fail. 2) Unscrew the cap of the brake fluid, however make sure you have everything ready as brake fluid soaks up moisture. If it's left open for even 15 minutes it can cause the vehicle to fail. 3) Check the colour of the brake fluid, if it's dark it is best that a mechanic takes a look and does the refill. 4) Check where the brake fluid lies, if it still has fluid in then top it up, however if it's empty the brake may need to be bled, most likely by a mechanic. Brake fluid is toxic and eats paint so clean it up quickly if you spill some.
+

How long should brake discs last?

Brake discs can last anywhere between 25 000 and 60 000 miles. This is dependent on the type of driving the vehicle is used for. You can expect brake discs to be changed at 25 000 with busy town centre driving, however if a vehicle is used on the motorway it can do up to 60 000 before needing to be changed. What you may also find is that the front discs will probably need to be changed fist as they carry most of the weight when braking.
+

What is braking distance?

Braking distance is the distance travelled from when the brakes are applied to when the vehicle stops.
+

What brake fluid do I need?

Brake fluid also known as hydraulic fluid is very important. There are several different types. The type depends on the age of a vehicle and whether it has ABS or traction control. The best way to check is to refer to the cars handbook.
+

What is a brake calliper?

The brake calliper is designed to slow down the vehicles wheels by creating friction between the rotors. They fit over the rotor like a clamp and are one of the most important components within the braking system as they actually cause the car to stop when the brakes are pressed.
+

How do car brakes work?

Brakes work by converting the kinetic energy generated from the car moving into heat, using friction. The friction is generated when the brake pedal is pressed. The pedal is connected to a lever which pushes a piston into the master cylinder which is filled with brake fluid. The fluid travels along pipes into wider cylinders that are positioned next to the brakes on each wheel. The force from the foot hitting the brake pedal is equal to the force of the brake fluid causing the vehicle to stop.
+

How often should brake fluid be changed?

For more specific information refer to your vehicles handbook. Generally it's advised to change the fluid every 2 years or 20,000 miles, whichever is sooner.
+

How to tell if brake discs need replacing?

1) Jack up the vehicle and remove a wheel 2) Look at the brake disc for signs of uneven wear and rust. (The brake disc is a circular metal object). You don't need to remove the callipers, just examine the visible part. Uneven wear and signs of rust will indicate that the discs need to be changed.
+

What do anti lock brakes do?

ABS works on cars by preventing the wheels from locking up and maintaining grip with the road. The anti-lock braking system is most effective allowing the driver to steer the car when braking suddenly. The ABS also stops all four wheels from locking when the vehicle skids.
+

How to change a brake light?

1) Firstly unscrew the casing with a screwdriver, and gently pull it forward as it comes undone. It has wires attached to it so can't fully come out however it still provides enough space to change the bulb. 2) Follow wires to the bulb holder of the bulb you want to change and gently unscrew the bulb holder. It's more of a half turn and then you should be able to remove the holder. 3) Remove the old the bulb, put the new bulb in. 4) Retrace the steps to but everything back together.
+

How to top up brake fluid?

1) Firstly clean the top of the reservoir while the lid is still on. This is to prevent dirt falling into the reservoir which can cause the brakes the fail. 2) Unscrew the cap of the brake fluid, make sure you have everything ready as brake fluid soaks up moisture if it's left open for even 15 minutes it can cause the vehicle to fail. 3) Check the colour of the brake fluid, if it's dark it is best that a mechanic takes a look and does the refill. 4) Check where the brake fluid lies, if it still has fluid in then top it up, however if it's empty the brake may need to be bled. The bleeding is best done by a mechanic. Brake fluid is toxic and eats paint so if you spill any be sure to clean it up quickly.
+

Why is my brake fluid low?

Brake fluid can be low either because it's being used in the vehicles braking system (which is normal) or there is a leak. If you think there may be a leak it's important to get it checked out asap. The end result will be no blake fluid which would mean when pressed the brake will be pressed all the way down however the vehicle will not stop.
+

How do I know when to change my brakes?

Brakes naturally deteriorate over time and need to be changed, normally around 50 000 miles for discs and 30 000 miles for pads. With this in mind they may need to be changed before this, here are the indicators to look out for. 1) Brake warning light on the dashboard. 2) Squeaking or squealing noise 3) Pulling to the left or right when braking ( one pad may be more worn than another and will need replacing.) 4) Having to press the brake pedal all the way to the floor before the brakes are effective. If you notice any of these things when driving the brakes definitely need to be checked, if not changed.
+

Why is my brake warning light on?

There are 2 lights on the dashboard relevant to the brakes. The ABS warning light which refers to the anti-lock braking system. It could just be an issue with the sensor and in most cases will be safe to drive as long as there's no noise coming from the wheels, however it should be checked at some point by a mechanic. The brake warning light which looks like an exclamation mark again could be caused by a sensor issue, the brake pads or discs may need replacing or there's a leak. As long as the braking distance hasn't increased you can manage a trip to the mechanic. If both the ABS and brake warning lights are on at the same time the vehicle is unsafe to drive and there could be a major fault with the brakes.
+

What is the difference between dot3 and dot5 brake fluid?

All brake fluid properties are set by the department of transportation DOT. The comparable properties between the different types of brake fluid are boiling point, compressibility, corrosion prevention and viscosity. DOT 3 is glycol-ether based and DOT 5 fluid is silicone base. Glycol based fluids gradually absorb moisture from the atmosphere and DOT 5 does not absorb moisture. DOT 3 and DOT 5 cannot be mixed. In addition they have different boiling points. DOT 3 dry boiling point: 205 degrees Celsius and wet boiling point: 140 degrees Celsius, and DOT 5 dry boiling point: 260 degrees Celsius and wet boiling point: 180 degrees Celsius.

Brake Pads and Brake Discs

A brake, or brake pad is a system that safely enables a car to stop. Brakes get rid of the kinetic energy that helps the car move, which is done by using force of friction to convert this motion of energy into heat. Your car's braking system is made up of the following components: Brake discs, which spin with your car's wheels, Brake Pads, which push on the discs to slow the car, Brake Calipers which hold, and push, the pads, Brake Lines (or 'Hoses') which carry Brake Fluid, and your Brake Master Cylinder and Servo, which work to amplify the effort you use when pushing the brake pedal. Wear or failure of any one of these components will cause braking problems, requiring repair.

Modern cars have brakes on all four wheels which are operated by a hydraulic system and are made up of several components all of which are subject to stress which could result in breakage.

The front brakes in a car are typically the ones which play the greater part in bringing a car to stop as the weight of the car is thrown forward every time the vehicle comes to a stop.

There are different systems used for braking from one car to the next which suits the needs of the vehicle size and function.

The common hydraulic system uses fluid to apply pressure to pistons in the car close to its wheels to bring the car to a halt.

Some cars also have power brake assistance which helps to reduce the amount of effort required to apply stopping power.

If you need to have your brakes repaired there are several issues that could have caused the problem and several things that could be affected.

If you suspect you need your brakes repaired but your car is still drivable, there are some symptoms which could give you clues as to what the problem is.

The brakes are often the noisiest part of a car if there is an issue which means you should be able to hear a problem which cannot be said of many other broken car parts. Therefore, noticing the need for a car brake repair should be obvious. But you can check faulty brake symptoms here.

What are Brake Pads?

Brake pads are a critical component of a car and a vehicle cannot come to a halt without them functioning properly. Brake pads are fitted to the brake calipers which push the pads into the brake discs which are fitted to a car wheel. When a car is moving, the pads grip the discs to slow down the wheel and thus slow the car down.

A high amount of heat energy is created from the resulting friction as explained above and over time, this will wear brake pads down.

Brake pad replacement is a common job, the work to remove a worn-down-set is not complex so if you require a brake pad replacement, the repair will not be a lengthy one.

If you would like to understand how to tell when your brakes need servicing read our dedicated guide.

What are Brake Discs?

Brake discs are fitted to the car wheel itself and they are gripped by the brake pads.

Brake discs replacement is more expensive; the parts are more expensive than pads. Often pads are placed at the same time the discs are replaced.

If a mechanic advises you to replace your brake discs, they will likely suggest replacing the pads at the same time due to a the low cost of the part and the little extra labour time needed.

Brake Pad Replacement Cost

The cost of brake pad replacement may vary depending on the car make and model. This is because there are different sizes of brake pads and the cost increases as they get bigger. For example, a Land Rover will require a bigger set of brake pads as opposed to a Fiat Punto.

We have written a brake price comparison guide if you want to learn more.

If you want a good brake pad deal, you can compare quotes from garages near you by entering you details at the top of the page.

Brake Disc Replacement Cost

If you specifically require brake disc replacement, the work will take a similar amount of time to a brake pad replacement.

However, as highlighted above, the cost will be more expensive that pads due to the parts pricing.

How to change brake pads

Brake pads are changed by removing the wheel and unscrewing the bolts which hold the part in place. The part is then simply taken off the brake caliper and a new brake pad is fitted. The same process will be applied for each of the pads that need to be replaced.

Common Brake Repairs

There are many other common issues which can arise with the braking system which are not connected to brake pads and discs issues. The brake lines are susceptible to leakage as brake fluid can leak from the system if rust is untreated. The master cylinder is also a part of the braking system which can become faulty. If you would like to understand more we have a dedicated page for brake repairs.

If you want to know how brakes work, we have created a dedicated guide.

Signs of faulty brake pads and discs

There are several obvious signs that your brake pads and discs are not operating properly. If your car is taking much longer to come to a stop, it will be clear that there is a problem with your brakes.

Other signs of faulty brake pads and discs are;

  • Burning smell
  • Spongy brake pedal
  • Screeching noise
  • Grinding noise
  • Pulling to one side
  • Squeaking noise

If you would like to learn more about the signs of brake problems we have written a dedicated guide.
