What is brake fade?

Brake fade is the temporary reduction or complete loss of brake power. It's caused by a build up of heat, which causes friction on the surface of the brake pads preventing the pads from working correctly. For example if brakes are continuously pressed when going down a steep hill you may get to the bottom and realise the brakes are no longer working. Brake fade is extremely dangerous because while pressing your brakes it may feel like they are still working. Unexpected behaviour within the braking system such as increased stopping distance is a good indicator. To avoid brake fade it's best to drive steadily and reduce the gear rather than continuously press down on the brakes. If brake fade happens reduce gear to get to a speed where you can safely pull over. The brakes will be very hot from overheating but should be back to normal after cooling down for an hour.

When are anti lock brakes most effective?

The anti-lock braking system is most effective allowing the driver to steer the car when braking suddenly and stops all four wheels locking when the vehicle skids. ABS may be able to reduce the braking distance in an emergency however it is not to be used as a way to drive more quickly, or closer to the car in front. Ideally the correct precautions should be taken so that the ABS doesn't need to be used. It's worth noting that with ABS will not work on sheet ice and will struggle in wet conditions.

Put simply brakes squeaking are caused by vibrations between the components. If the brakes only squeal sometimes it could just be rust between the components, until the rust is scraped off that will continue to be the case. However if the brakes always squeal then it's likely the pads are worn right down to the metal and need changing.

The brake fluid reservoir is usually on the drivers side, near the firewall and connected to the brake master cylinder. It should be a plastic container. 1) Firstly clean the top of the reservoir while the lid is still on. This is to prevent dirt falling into the reservoir which can cause the brakes the fail. 2) Unscrew the cap of the brake fluid, however make sure you have everything ready as brake fluid soaks up moisture. If it's left open for even 15 minutes it can cause the vehicle to fail. 3) Check the colour of the brake fluid, if it's dark it is best that a mechanic takes a look and does the refill. 4) Check where the brake fluid lies, if it still has fluid in then top it up, however if it's empty the brake may need to be bled, most likely by a mechanic. Brake fluid is toxic and eats paint so clean it up quickly if you spill some.

What is the difference between dot3 and dot5 brake fluid?

All brake fluid properties are set by the department of transportation DOT. The comparable properties between the different types of brake fluid are boiling point, compressibility, corrosion prevention and viscosity. DOT 3 is glycol-ether based and DOT 5 fluid is silicone base. Glycol based fluids gradually absorb moisture from the atmosphere and DOT 5 does not absorb moisture. DOT 3 and DOT 5 cannot be mixed. In addition they have different boiling points. DOT 3 dry boiling point: 205 degrees Celsius and wet boiling point: 140 degrees Celsius, and DOT 5 dry boiling point: 260 degrees Celsius and wet boiling point: 180 degrees Celsius.
