Frequently asked questions
+

What is a 'full service' on a car?

A full service involves thoroughly checking the fluids and components in the vehicle, to determine whether they need replacing, updating, or replenishing. Getting your car serviced will also help prevent larger jobs cropping up later on, thus saving you a lot of hassle and money.

+

When is my car due for a service?

The recommended service schedule for your vehicle will be outlined in your owner’s manual. However, the general rule would be that a full service be undertaken at least once a year or every 12,000 miles, whichever comes first.

+

How often should you service your car?

Your car should receive a full service annually, and if you undertake a high mileage it should receive an interim service in between at the 6 month mark.

+

What is included in a full service?

A full service is a visual inspection that includes around 60-70 checks, and will include some of the following:

Checks over your:

  • Battery condition
  • Tyre tread and pressure
  • Steering and wheel alignment
  • Wheel bearings
  • Brake pads and discs
  • Plus many more!

Top ups and replacements on your:

  • Anti freeze coolant
  • Brake fluid
  • Power steering fluid
  • Windscreen wash
  • Engine oil and filters
  • Plus many more!

Other comprehensively checked components are your:

  • Windscreen wipers
  • Door locks
  • External lights
  • Brake fluid condition
+

How long does a full service take?

A car’s full service can take around three hours to complete, if there are no significant issues encountered as they will of course lengthen the job time. You will ordinarily get your car back the same day but perhaps set a day aside for the service.

If you decide to book a major service, this can take slightly longer between three to four hours, as it essentially includes all of the checks included in with a full service, plus some extras.

+

What's the difference between a full and an interim service?

An interim service is less comprehensive than a full service, and is advised to be carried out every 6 months, or every 6,000 miles. Interim services focus on items that require the most regular renewal and maintenance, and in turn can help to address any problems early on to prevent the issue becoming worse later down the line. A full service covers all of the elements of an interim service, plus more.

+

What's the difference between a full and a major service?

Many garages won't differentiate between a full and a major service. Where they do, the major is even more comprehensive and may include items such as a full drain and renewal of brake fluid and coolant.

+

What are the benefits of getting a full service?

Though getting your annual full service is not a legal requirement, there are a number of safety and financial benefits to getting one. Just a few of these benefits include:

  • Decreases the chance of your car breaking down
  • Helps to improve fuel economy
  • Getting your annual full service helps towards getting a full service history, increasing the value of your car when reselling
  • Reduction of overall wear on your engine, brake pads and tyres through regular maintenance checks

Full Car Servicing Prices

To help you understand more about car servicing for your car, we have the produced the following guide to help you understand the subject in greater detail.

A car service is essentially a check carried out by a mechanic who analyses the essential systems in your car.

They will be looking to make sure the vehicle is safe to drive on the road which is why it is a legal requirement to have you serviced every twelve months.

A car service is NOT an MOT, even though many of the same parts and systems will be inspected during each.

The difference between an MOT and car service is that an MOT is a standardised check with specific rules and regulations set by the government.

A car service is carried out and fully controlled by the mechanic or garage carrying the work out.

This means that the pricing will change from garage to garage alone as well as from car to car, much like any other repair work.

There are two different types of car service, the interim car service and full car service.

As each service will change from garage to garage, they will carry out different checks and look at different parts.

Therefore it is vital that you are able to talk to more than one garage before you have the job completed. You need to be able to compare price and how thorough the checks will be.

Fortunately you are in the perfect place!

All you have to do is enter the details of your car in the form below and then sit back and relax while local garages send you direct quotes for a full or interim service.

Below you will see what most garages will check during a service however it is always worth checking before you book your car in as some garages may not cover what is listed.

Here are the parts and systems checks as part of most interim car services and full car services;

Full and Interim Car Service

  • Oil and Oil Filter Replacement
  • Brake Fluid
  • Anti-freeze Coolant
  • Windscreen Wash
  • Power Steering Fluid
  • Lights
  • Windscreen Wipers
  • Battery Condition
  • Charging System
  • Exhaust System
  • Tyre Tread and Pressure
  • Full Brake Check
  • Steering Check
  • Shock Absorbers Check
  • Suspension Check
  • Full car service (Includes all of the above and the following)Auxiliary Drive Belt Check
  • Wheel Alignment Check
  • Wheel Bearing Check
  • Wheel Balance
  • Brake Fluid Condition
  • Fuel Filter (Diesel)
  • Spark Plugs (Petrol)
  • Air Filter

Most of these parts and systems should be checked during a full car service or interim service, furthermore, if you require a top up of motor oil or any other repairs, you will have to pay an extra charge as a result.

A car service is essentially a full diagnostic to find out about the health of a car, it is not a service where specific repairs are included.

That is why it can help to have interim checks six months before a full service, if there is a minor problem, the interim check would find it and you will be able to resolve the issue before it gets any worse.

However if you do not have an interim check and you have an issue, it will only get worse meaning you will have to pay more money when it is eventually discovered in the full car service.
