An MOT is a service/test which every car is legally required to have carried out every 12 months. It ensures that your car is functioning, safe and of course legal to drive.

An MOT will take between 45 minutes and an hour. If repairs are required, it will of course take considerably longer depending on the repair’s nature.
It includes an inspection of the following:
· Screenwash
· Wiper blades
· Beam patterns
· Exhaust and engine mounts
· Brake pad levels
· Suppression joints and brushes
· Lights
· Tread depth
· Suspension levels
· Corrosion of the suspension mounts
· Engine exhaust emissions
· CO2 and CO3 emissions and hydrocarbon emissions

The most common reasons why cars fail their MOT are:
· worn seatbelts
· windscreen chips
· incorrect beam patterns
· insufficient tyre tread depth
· faulty registration plate lamps
· damaged wiper blades
You’ll be issued with a VT30 Certificate stating why the car failed. There is no time limit before a retest can be booked, and the garage will normally offer to carry out the required repairs. Therefore, you should undertake any necessary repairs pointed out by the garage to ensure a pass certificate.
Your car should go in for its MOT annually, unless of course it was bought and registered as brand new. If this is the case it is only required after three years of its registration, but after that point it should be taken in yearly like other cars.

An MOT is a service provided by garages which every car is legally required to have carried out.
A cars roadworthiness will be checked during the MOT as each major component is inspected by a trained professional. A garage has to have authorisation from the DVSA to carry out an MOT as they have to meet the minimum requirement to carry out the inspection.
You don’t need to take your car for an MOT for three years if you buy and register it brand new, however as soon as the three years are up, it is a legal requirement that you take your car for an MOT annually.
